Essential Oil Dilution Chart (Safe Ratios for Adults, Kids & Sensitive Systems)

General Guidelines

This dilution chart uses more carrier oil than standard essential oil dilution recommendations.

In many cases, essential oils can work in a way similar to homeopathy — using less of the plant itself, supported with a carrier oil, can still provide benefit while being more gentle and easier for the body to work with.

Suggested Dilutions

  • 0.5% → 1 drop essential oil to 1 TBSP carrier oil
    Infants (6–24 months)
  • 1% → 3 drops essential oil to 2 TBSP carrier oil
    Elderly or sensitive individuals
  • 2% → 6 drops essential oils to 2 TBSP carrier oil
    Maximum daily recommended dilution
  • 5% → 15 drops essential oils to 2 TBSP carrier oil
    Short-term use only

Please consult with an aromatherapist or medical professional before using essential oils on children under two years of age.

Hot oils such as Cinnamon, Clove Bud, Peppermint, and Oregano should be diluted to 0.5% and are not recommended for use on children under ten years of age.

A simpler way to begin

Working through dilution ratios and multiple oils can feel like a lot to manage at once.

Many people find it more practical to begin with one approach and stay consistent, rather than trying to calculate and combine everything all at once.

You can choose what fits you best:

A note on approach

These guidelines are here to support safe use, not to complicate the process.

In many cases, starting with less and building gradually tends to be more supportive than trying to do too much at once.

Patch Test

For first-time use, apply a small amount of diluted essential oil to an area such as the inside of the elbow.

Observe for 24 hours for any reactions, including:

  • skin irritation
  • headache
  • nausea
  • respiratory discomfort
  • dizziness
